Two crops, two storage areas

How to store garlic and potatoes over winter

Garlic and potatoes need different conditions. Keep garlic in a dry, dark, well-ventilated place at about 10–15 °C. Potatoes need a darker, cooler place at about 7–10 °C and packaging that lets air through.

How to store garlic and potatoes over winter

Store garlic and potatoes separately so that each crop has the right conditions. Hang garlic or spread it out in a dry, dark, well-ventilated place at 10–15 °C. Keep potatoes in a dark, cool, well-ventilated place at 7–10 °C.

Garlic needs a dry, well-ventilated place

Keep whole bulbs or a braid at about 10–15 °C. The room should be dry and dark, with air circulating around the bulbs.

Do not seal garlic in a plastic bag or store it in the fridge. Hang a braid, or spread loose bulbs in an open basket or crate.

Keep potatoes cooler and away from light

Store potatoes at about 7–10 °C, away from daylight and artificial light. Mesh or paper sacks, baskets and wooden crates all let air through.

Check your supply regularly and remove green, soft or damaged tubers. Divide a larger quantity between several crates so that it is easier to inspect.

Set up two labelled storage areas

If you have one store room, use two separate areas or containers. Put garlic in the drier, slightly warmer part and potatoes in the darkest, coolest part of the room.

Write the collection date on each container. At every check, use the tubers or bulbs that show the first signs of softening or sprouting.
