Braided by hand

Home-grown garlic braid

A braid is a practical way to store home-grown garlic, not simply a decoration. We make it from the dry stalks after the garlic has finished curing under cover for six weeks. It weighs around 1.2 kg and costs €25. Hang it in a well-ventilated place and take the bulbs from the bottom upwards as you need them.

A garlic braid to use, not just display

The braid brings around 1.2 kg of garlic together in a form you can hang in the kitchen or pantry. Break off one bulb whenever you need it. Because the braid hangs freely, more air can circulate around the garlic than in a closed container or drawer. One braid, made by hand, costs €25.

Start with the bulbs at the bottom and work upwards. The rest of the braid will remain tied together and hanging. The garlic is still intended for cooking; braiding simply arranges the bulbs in a practical form while keeping the dry stalks as part of the product.

  • The hanging form allows air to circulate

How we make a garlic braid

We plant every clove by hand in late October. The garlic is lifted in late June and left in the field for two days so the soil on the roots can dry. We then move it under cover in bundles, where it cures naturally for six weeks without drying ovens.

We only begin making braids once the stalks feel like paper. At that point, we clean and sort the garlic, then braid the dry stalks by hand. The order matters: the braid is made after curing and is never woven from freshly lifted garlic.

  • Harvested in late June
  • Two days of initial drying in the field
  • Six weeks of natural curing under cover

Where to hang your braid and how to order it

Choose a dry, dark and well-ventilated place at around 10–15 °C. A refrigerator or sealed plastic bag is unsuitable. Do not enclose the braid in a container either, as its practical advantage is that air can circulate around the bulbs.

You can pick up your braid free of charge at Gaberje, Kratka 4, Lendava, or request international home delivery. We confirm the shipping price before dispatch. Once we receive your order, we confirm availability and your chosen pickup or delivery arrangement.
